I Love You a New Way!

Ministry has officially started! Our days are so much busier and fuller as well. We get to spend such great quality time with kids that are so sweet as well as kids that are on the spicier side:) All of them are so fun to minister to and pour Jesus into. They pour so much Jesus into us as well as the reward is beyond words.

A normal day of ministry for me starts off with a short run and a few exercises. I eat and have my quiet time:) and then continue to get ready. I usually start my day at 6:15, so not extremely early. Yay!! We then have team time at 8 am where we learn new ways to study the Bible and go through different books of the Bible. I love this time because it gives you opportunities to think in different ways but also hear what others may have to say about certain passages. Then at 9-10 it’s our ministry hosts time. In this time sometimes we go over projects we have to do and sometimes we all go out to coffee! At 10:30 ish we arrive at our ministry, for me it’s Beats abs Books! We clean and get ready for kids until 2:25 and then the fun begins!!

We all have different areas of education that we excel in and so we all put them to use in the different areas. All the kids are from the Townships, or squatter camps, and don’t get access to a good education or even an education at all. Beats and Books was created to give kids in the Townships, who can’t afford school, an opportunity to learn basic skills that we may take for granted. We are helping teach these kids these basic skills. There are math lessons, literacy, music and dance. Being me… you know where I am teaching… yes math. Haha. I love the other areas too but math is my specialty.

So… once the kids get there we get to give them some food to eat, and then rotate them through their classes. They are all so sweet, it breaks my heart that a lot of them don’t receive the love they deserve. I show them as much love as I can. It’s so rewarding to see their faces light up with joy and confidence when they finally get a math concept and can do the calculations on their own. It’s beautiful!! However, I never realized how hard it is to teach basic math though. There is also a slight language barrier that has to be overcome as well. I have 13 and 16 year olds doing basic math and struggle with reading and writing. It makes you want to take back any complaint I ever had about school. These kids also choose to be there. They come on their own! No one is forcing them to be there. They want to make a change.

Africa has been so kind to us all. We have all had the opportunities to form bonds with kids and people around us that are so special. New perspectives have been formed. Hearts broken. Tears have been shed. But also smiles have been shared. With smiles we also had our first braai. It’s an African BBQ. The hostile kids that go to Global Leadership Academy (the group we are partnering with for ministry) invited us and it was amazing! We laughed, danced, played games and ate food. They taught us some of their culture and we shared some of ours. It’s so crazy to see a people that is always so full of joy even though suffering and pain is evident in their life. I have loved every second of it and looking forward to the rest of the month here. Until next time… as they say in Afrikaans “ec es leaf ferr yo” I love you.
